occultation

An occultation is a complete obscuring of light by an object. In astronomy, it is the total block-out of light from a celestial body by another that has moved in front of it.  A occultation by the Moon is when it appears to move in front of another object.

By observing and timing lunar occultations, a backyard astronomer can contribute to science. See volunteer science opportunities and training at IOTA.
