— a shift in position of nearby stars (vs more distant ones) that’s apparent when observed from two different locations relative to Earth’s orbit. Researchers use this difference to determine the distances to nearer stars. The parallax of the nearest stars, measured from opposite ends of Earth’s orbit, is less than one arcsecond.
